When a house catches fire, every second counts - and for the pets inside, those seconds are often the difference between life and death. Most fire departments across the United States arrive on scene without a single piece of equipment designed to treat an animal suffering from smoke inhalation. Standard human oxygen masks can't seal over a pet's snout, making even the most dedicated firefighter limited in what they can do.
That's the gap Project Breathe™ was created to fill. Launched in 2006 by Invisible Fence® Brand, the program donates free, specially designed pet oxygen mask kits to fire departments and eligible first responder organizations across the U.S. and Canada - no cost, no catch.
Over the past 20 years, Invisible Fence® Brand has donated over 27,000 masks across the United States. This October, in honor of National Fire Prevention Month and Project Breathe's 20th anniversary, Invisible Fence® Brand is excited to launch a renewed focus on delivering meaningful impact in local communities. With its network of local dealers operating in communities across the country, the brand is uniquely positioned to bring these kits directly to the fire stations that need them most through donation events open to local media, residents, and anyone with a passion for keeping pets safe.
The need has only grown. Each year, an estimated 40,000 pets die in U.S. house fires - the vast majority from smoke inhalation, not flames. Wildfires and structure fires are becoming more frequent and more intense, with smoke now traveling far beyond a fire's origin point. Unlike humans, pets instinctively hide in enclosed spaces during a fire, prolonging their exposure to toxic gases. They need advocates. Project Breathe™ puts equipment in the hands of those advocates.

So far this year, Invisible Fence® Brand dealers have donated kits to thirteen fire departments across six states, with more events scheduled throughout October. Here's a look at the donations that have kicked off the celebration:
