Getting a new Invisible Fence® Brand system is an exciting step toward giving your dog more freedom and keeping them safe. But the system only works as well as the training behind it. The good news is that professional training is built into every Invisible Fence® Brand experience, and as an owner, your role at home is just as important as what happens during the training sessions.
Professional Training Is Included With Every System
Every Invisible Fence® Brand system comes with professional pet training through our Perfect Start Plus™ Pet Training program.
Developed in collaboration with leading animal behaviorists, the program is customized to your individual pet, taking into account their breed, age, size, and personality. Our certified trainers come to your home and work directly with your pet, so the training happens in the environment where they actually live.
How the Training Process Works
Training begins indoors, with low-level distractions. This teaches your pet that the flags are correlated to the correction they feel and that they are in control of that correction.
The small white flags placed along the perimeter of your yard serve as a visual cue that helps your pet understand where their boundary is located. Your trainer will work with your pet near the boundary so they can begin to associate the flags with the audible warning tone from the Computer Collar® Receiver.
The process is gradual and always includes positive reinforcement. The tone is introduced first, giving your dog the opportunity to learn and respond to the warning before any static correction is ever involved. Check out more with this video
Your Role at Home Between Sessions
While your certified trainer leads the sessions, consistency at home reinforces everything they teach. Always make sure your dog is wearing their Computer Collar® Receiver whenever they are outside, or when they should be respecting an indoor or outdoor boundary. However it is also crucial to to give them periodic breaks from the collar for their skin health. Many owners do this while their pets eat, or when they are sleeping. Your certified trainer can help you identify the best time for this "collar break."
The collar should be snug enough that you can fit only one finger between the correction post and your pet's skin. Check the fit regularly as your dog's coat and weight can change over time.
Replace the Power Cap® Battery every three months to keep the system functioning reliably. A collar with a weak or dead battery won't deliver the warning tone or correction, which means your pet's boundary is not active.
Walking Your Dog During Training
Many owners wonder whether they can still walk their dog while training is underway. Invisible Fence® Brand recommends waiting until your dog is successfully contained for two to three weeks before introducing an exit ritual. Your trainer will guide you through this process, which involves a specific word and consistent exit point to create a routine that signals your dog that it's okay to cross the boundary line for a walk.
Every Dog Learns at Their Own Pace
Some pets pick up the boundary quickly while others need more time and repetition - both are completely normal.
The Perfect Start Plus™ Pet Training program is designed to work at your pet's pace, not a predetermined schedule. Your trainer will adjust their approach based on how your pet is responding, ensuring the process stays positive and attuned to their behavior and learning style.
A True Partnership
Training on an Invisible Fence® Brand system is a partnership between our certified trainers and you as the owner. The professional sessions lay the foundation, and your consistency at home is what makes the training stick.
