When homeowners explore installing an Invisible Fence® Brand system, a common question is whether the boundary wire must always be buried underground. While most installations involve placing the wire below the surface, there are situations where installing the wire above ground, either temporarily or in certain areas, may be possible.

How Invisible Fence® Systems Work

Wired Invisible Fence® systems create a customized boundary around your yard using a radio signal transmitted through a braided metal wire. With our underground dog fence system, the wire is installed around the perimeter of your property and communicates with your pet’s compatible collar.
As your pet approaches the boundary, the collar provides a warning and, if necessary, a correction to help them learn where the boundary is located. To keep the system “invisible” and protected, the boundary wire is typically buried just a few inches underground around the perimeter of your property.

Situations Where Above-Ground Installation May Be Used

Although underground installation is the designated installation method, there are some scenarios where our installers may run the wire above ground.
For example, installers may attach the wire to an existing fence, run it along landscaping features, or place it along surfaces where burying the wire is difficult.

Another important factor is climate and ground conditions.

In regions with extreme cold weather, the ground may become frozen and difficult to dig. In these cases, installers may temporarily run the boundary wire above ground so your system can begin working right away. Once temperatures warm and the ground softens, they can return to bury the wire properly for long-term protection.

Why Underground Installation Is Recommended

While above-ground placement can work in certain circumstances, burying the wire is generally preferred because it helps:

  • Protect the wire from weather and lawn equipment
  • Keep the system hidden from view
  • Provide a more durable, long-term installation

Fortunately, the wire only needs to be buried a few inches below the surface, so installation is usually quick and minimally disruptive to your yard.

Professional Installation Ensures the Best Setup

Invisible Fence® systems are typically installed by trained local professionals who evaluate your yard, soil conditions, and your pet’s needs. They design the boundary layout and determine the best way to install the wire so the system functions reliably.
In some cases, this may include temporary above-ground placement due to weather conditions, followed by burying the wire when conditions allow.

The Bottom Line

Invisible Fence® boundary wires are most often buried underground, but above-ground installation can be used in certain situations. This may include challenging terrain, existing structures, or temporary installations during extreme winter conditions when the ground is frozen.
A professional installer can determine the best approach for your property while ensuring your pet’s system works safely and effectively year-round.
