Hesitating and making thoughtful decisions around the signal field when faced with distractions and performing visual check‑ins with the flags & landmarks of your property- showing they have confident awareness of their location in accordance with the boundary. These visual check-ins can occur before a temptation or after.

Choosing not to engage with the boundary despite varying levels of temptations however, self‑retreating on their own during the rare moments an activation does occur and are quick to go back to play or relaxing within the boundary.

Using all areas of the yard within their boundary comfortably and confidently each time they are outside.
90% Play, 10% Training:
Most outdoor time should be relaxed exploration, pottying, and play (With leash rules & supervision matched to the phase of training you are on). Utilize short 10-minute durations to boundary train multiple times a day using a star‑pattern around the yard, incorporating various levels of temptations every so often.
Protect the Trust at the Boundary:
Never pull, call, or lure your pet into the signal field. Do not use food to tempt your pet beyond the boundary and avoid directly and purposefully throwing toys or treats past the boundary.
Guide, Don’t Punish:
If your pet enters the signal field, allow them to make the choice. If needed, calmly guide them back after a brief correction (2-3 seconds).
Reward Good Decisions:
Praise and engage in play whenever your pet retreats, hesitates, or chooses not to interact with the boundary.
Over the next several weeks, you’ll gradually fade both the leash and your close-proximity supervision. Every pet learns at their own pace, and each environment presents unique challenges. The timelines below are guidelines-each phase should be practiced for at least 4–7 days (or longer) and only advanced once all goals for that phase are consistently met. During your lesson, your Invisible Fence Brand® trainer will guide you pertaining to which phase of training you are on at the completion of your third lesson.
Proper collar fit is essential for your pet’s safety. The collar should sit high on the neck and must be removed at night, when your pet is crated, and anytime your pet leaves the property.
Continue to carry or drive your pet off the property until they are fully trained. Once your pet has been successfully contained off‑leash for two consecutive weeks with no escapes, you may begin walking your pet off the property using the Exit Routine below. An Exit Routine clearly communicates to your pet when they have permission to cross the boundary. Skipping this step can cause confusion and may put your pet’s safety at risk in the future.
Power Cap® batteries should be replaced every 90 days. For instructions on battery replacement, information about our battery plan, and additional details, watch the video provided.
