Animal Shelter Program

In an effort to help animal shelters avoid pets being relinquished due to nuisance barking complaints, we created the Shelter Bark Control Program which offers free Deluxe Bark Control collars to help solve nuisance barking issues.  Since 2005, over 150 shelters participated in the program with donations of over 750 Deluxe Bark Control Collars to the agencies.

The shelter organization simply signs up to participate in the program and then receives up to six bark control collars.  Along with the bark collars, a training CD will be shipped to you or hand delivered by your local Invisible Fence Brand dealer.  Upon receipt, each person involved with the program will need to view the training CD to learn how the collars operate. Your local Invisible Fence Brand dealer may be available to assit you with this training.

When a barking dog complaint is presented to a staff member, they may offer free use of the bark collar.  After filling out a release form, the pet owner will receive a Bark Collar for a pre-determined length of time (usually from 7 to 10 days).  The collar will then be returned (depending on how the program is set up).  The collar is then cleaned and made ready for the next use.

We are also working with Suzanne Hetts, a nationally known behaviorist with Animal Behavior Associates, Inc., to develop two unique tools for ACOs and Shelters to help them solve barking problems. The first is a handout entitled "What to Do About Your Dog's Barking Before Trying an Anti-bark Collar" to offer solutions and instructions for pet parents to manage their dog's environment, enrich their dog's life, and change their dog's behavior. The second is a handout entitled “Is an Anti-bark Collar Right for Your Barking Dog?” This document presents a series of questions to help determine why your dog is barking and if an anti-bark collar is an appropriate alternative or if you need to seek other help.

Each shelter organization will need to adapt the program to fit their needs.
