Donation of fence will help keep service dog and youth safe

“Kodi will give Jakob a social leg up; everybody loves the dogs,” said Drew Hawkyard, who has fostered dogs prior to them going into service dog training, and is also a dealer for Invisible Fence Brand.

Jakob May’s family has already noticed the change service dog Kodi has made in the 14-year-old’s life.

Jakob has autism.

“Kids with autism can have a lot of anxiety when they’re dealing with a high-sensory environment,” explained Janice, Jakob’s mom. The family lives in Mount Hope.

While going to Lime Ridge Mall can be almost a mundane experience for many, “There are birds flying around, there are crowds of people, you can see outside with the skylights, and on the top floor, you can see down to the ground floor. That’s a lot going on for someone with autism.”

For Jakob and others with autism, “Having a service dog redirects their attention back to the dog,” explained Janice.

An autism service dog is also a chance to open a dialogue with people who many not know much about the condition.

“Kodi will give Jakob a social leg up; everybody loves the dogs,” said Drew Hawkyard, who has fostered dogs prior to them going into service dog training, and is also a dealer for Invisible Fence Brand.

Invisible Fence Brand donated the hardware for a fencing system, and Hawkyard donated his time to
set up the system and work with the May family to learn how to use it, and will conduct any followup needed.

“The donation is incredible. Our property is a double lot, and we didn’t want to fence it all,” said Janice.

Furthermore, Hawkyard pointed out that “a traditional fence doesn’t cover the garage or the front door; if you have guests over and they leave the door open, the dog could still get out. They needed a full perimeter fence.”

Sue Thompson, director of media relations Canada for Invisible Fence Brand, explained the
company’s involvement by saying, “We are there to keep the dog safe, which in turn aids in keeping the children safe.”

Jakob acquired Kodi through Autism Dog Services in Lynden.

Kodi, and other service dogs like him, are valued at $18,000 and up; many people still don’t understand what an autism service dog does.

“I’ve had people ask me, when they see Kodi wearing the working jacket, if the dog is autistic,” said Janice.

“This dog will give Jakob independence, self confidence and more... service dogs have a higher purpose in life than just being a pet,” said Hawkyard.
